A sit down with Dan Taylor

In our series of A SIT DOWN WITH we speak to our award-winning Broking Manager, Dan Taylor.

What does the 2019 Young Broker of the Year at the UK Broker Awards want MFL to the famous for:

Do you enjoy working at MFL?
I really enjoy working here, I joined nearly 12 months ago now and the time has absolutely flown by… and as the saying goes “time flies when you’re having fun".

What made you want to join MFL?
I wasn’t actively looking to move from my previous employer, however, when I first spoke to Kevin and Mark and they explained their vision for the future it was a no-brainer for me. The opportunity sounded like a very exciting one where I could join, and play a major part in a forward-thinking company that want to achieve sustainable growth, build a solid succession plan and remain independent in the future for the benefit of both the individuals who work here and the clients who will continue to receive a very personal approach.

What have you found most challenging during your time here?
Although in my previous role I was a Broking Manager, the company set-up is completely different. For example, at MFL we have several schemes and understanding the intricacies of how these work and are a benefit for both us and clients alike isn’t something I had really ever considered previously.

If you had to sum up your role here in one sentence, what would it be?
To provide the best possible solutions for both our staff and our clients, whether that be through building and maintaining strong insurer relationships to help with the placement of risks, or by creating processes and procedures to mean we can work in the most efficient and effective way.

What does a typical day look like for you?
My typical day is ever evolving. Within the first few months of my role I was heavily involved in us migrating computer systems and working on processes and procedures as I had done similar previously. My days now do still include some of this as I think we will always look at ways that we can work more effectively to improve our clients journey, but I am now more focussed on the Broking Department specifically and will be in discussion with my team about on-going risks to decide where they will be best placed. I may have an insurer meeting or two as well as maintaining the relationships there is vitally important to get the best outcome for our customers.

What’s your favourite way to spend a day off?
I have a wife and two young children, so honestly, whatever they want to do…. This has included trips to Peppa Pig World, Cbeebies Land and countless trips to parks and farms but seeing a smile on all their faces is what I live for. Other than this, it would be watching the greatest team in England (in 2015-16), Leicester City.

What do you consider to be your best asset, and how are you able to use this at MFL?
I’d say finding solutions. This doesn’t always mean when there is a problem but is useful when it comes to things like analysing our book of business and getting a placement strategy in place to ensure the best possible outcomes for us as a business, and more importantly our clients. It also comes in handy on many occasion when discussing a complex risk with members of the team and thinking outside of the box to get a positive result for the matter in hand. This is of course helped by working with like-minded people.

What has surprised you most about working here / dealing with clients?
I thought as we had a number of schemes that our client-base would be fairly limited, however it is the complete opposite. I find the number of different trades and professions fascinating and really enjoy learning about each of them.

What has been your favourite part of working at MFL?
The people here are fantastic, from top down everyone is so friendly and are in it together. The trust provided in staff from the top is great and it really gives us the empowerment to achieve great things.

What do you want MFL to be famous for?
I want us to be the go to Independent Insurance Broker that you know you can trust to give you a personal and friendly experience whilst guaranteeing professional advice/solutions for all of your Insurance needs.
